Nob Hill on CAL Ave. is an excellent hardware store! While small, it is packed with EVERYTHING I've needed. And, they order or bring from the other location if they don't have it at Palo Alto store! :)

Had our luggages kept here while we explore California Ave upon arrival at Palo Alto. Micheal is very, very nice and helpful. He even had us stay inside the crew room to keep warm while waiting for our cousin to pick us up. This hardware has a lot of stuff, from houseware to hardware. You can even find back scratchers here. I think the name is actually Nob Hill Hardware, but it's on California Avenue. Great place for gardening needs and birdseed, along with every nut, bolt, and mechanical thingie you'd expect in a quality hardware store, the kind of place you can get lost in like you did as a child. And the owners are lovely people!
